RESUMO

We develop a protocol for assessing the impact of an intervention aimed at improving sleep quality among university nursing students. The study is designed as a pilot randomized controlled trial to be applied during the 2022-23 academic year and is registered at Clinical Trials Gov website (NCT05273086). A total of 60 nursing students will be recruited from a Spanish university. They will be divided into two groups: (30) intervention group and (30) control group. The intervention group will attend two cognitive-behavioural therapy sleep programme sessions focused on knowledge of anatomical structures involved in sleep, chronotype, synchronization, and good sleeping habits. Subjective and objective sleep quality will be assessed before and after the intervention for both groups. In addition to sleep quality, socio-demographic parameters, physical activity, lifestyle habits, and anthropometric measures will be considered prior to intervention. Finally, a satisfaction questionnaire will be applied for posterior analysis. This study is an innovative, relevant intervention that aims to improve sleep quality among university nursing students. Both the approach and the use of objective and subjective validated outcome measurements are key features of this study.

Introduction: The Department of Basic Biomedical Sciences at the Universidad Europea de Madrid is committed to design activities that foster an environment of active and inclusive student-centered learning and contextualized in a professional environment. The aim is to ensure, through an integrated assimilation of fundamental concepts, the student motivation to learn and facilitate the extracurricular knowledge. Subjects and methods: Within our added-value activities, we have designed a play-based activity with students from the first course of the degrees of Medicine, Pharmacy and the double degree Pharmacy-Biotechnology. Using a clinical case related to a cardiovascular disease as a thread, a gymkhana was designed following a workstations working model. The correct resolution of all tasks included in each workstation without delay was finally rewarded. Results: Respondents found the integrated sessions more useful than the traditional seminars and also remarked that they bring up a variety of contents from different subjects successfully (54% positive answers). 58% of the survey participants expressed that the activity approached them new content not covered through the traditional master class. Conclusions: We have ensured that students develop skills required to take their future roles as members of multidisciplinary teams, thanks to the participation of students from different degrees. Moreover, the activity managed to increase motivation and the interest for the most basic concepts of Biomedical Sciences through real integration and direct application to a real clinical case. The experience was evaluated as very positive by all participants

Introduction. The recent reform in higher education in Europe implies a curricular redesign based on an integrating approach. In Medicine, integrative teaching of the basic sciences remains a major challenge when applied in the first years. Materials and methods. The goal of this work is to describe a new methodology to implement an integrating curriculum of the basic sciences in the initial courses of Medicine. This program was applied during two consecutive academic years(2009-2010 and 2010-2011) over a total of 350 students. A satisfaction survey was designed using a Likert-like scale for quantitative analysis. Results. The use of an integration curriculum in basic sciences helps to establish a balanced curriculum between traditional and new methodologies. The combination of an integrated curriculum and small group methodology, has clear benefits for the students by facilitating the acquisition of general competencies as enhancement of team work abilities, and improving comprehension of basic sciences. Conclusions. In spite of additional workload for students and teachers, successful implementation of an integrating curriculum in the initial courses of Medicine requires a balanced number of students and appropriate learning resources to achieve an optimal development of specific and key skills (AU)
